How many GIS Days were about open source?

Filed under: Uncategorized — ubikcan @ 7:42 pm

GIS Day was last Wednesday and I’ve been noticing that several of them were devoted to open source (including one at our local university). Isn’t that interesting, that GIS Day (invented by that most traditional of Big GIS, ESRI) has started to be taken over by open source GIS? What must ESRI think about that??

Perhaps the best one I’ve seen so far was by Paul Ramsey who was invited to the Kansas University GIS Day. He’s put up his slide show at his site (warning, it’s large, like his eponymous elephant–Paul, have you heard of Slideshare?).

Among his points:

“the age of ESRI is already over” (slide 93)
“the places where ESRI has built an insurmountable lead..are not the places where our field is going to be growing”
“open source is good enough and it’s a heck of a lot cheaper”

Etc. For more of his 113 slides (no really) see here.
