Toynbee tiles (transferred from old blog)

The Thanksgiving hiatus is over!

Here’s an interesting phenomenon: Toynbee tiles. This one was taken by me recently on the corner of Sansom and Broad in Philadelphia. No one knows where they come from or what they mean, but there they are on the high street…

They’re quite small. Here’s what it looks like if you look down at it. You can see the brick for size contrast.


Philly has quite a few of them (I’ve noticed about 4 in the Broad street area). The one pictured here may be a copy (it leaves out a couple of words) though the wikipedia article has no actual evidence.
