One snarky commentator explains it thusly:
The northeast and west coast states are rich because they have enlightened elites who support immigration, public education, high wages, environmental protections and other policies that lead to economic growth. The southern and plains states are poor because their elites are dominated by (a) gun-crazed anti-science racist bible-thumpers and (b) small business owners who only care about keeping taxes and wages low. In other words, Republicans.
