Winsor McCay was an early animation artist–predating Disney by some time. In 1914 for example he created one of the first ever cartoon characters with a strong personality–Gertie the Dinosaur.

Interestingly though he also created a short movie which features a flying house with the world turning below it–arguably the world’s first animated map.

He also seems to have been an advocate of America enteringthe First World War as the cartoon–also with a globe image–shows.

McCay worked before the invention of cel animation which means that that he (or his team) had to draw every frame of his animations! He did use keyframes apparently.
